A Theory of the Initial Mass Function for Star Formation in Molecular Clouds
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a class of models for the initial mass function (IMF) for stars forming within molecular clouds. This class of models uses the idea that stars determine their own masses through the action of powerful stellar outflows. This concept allows us to calculate a semi-empirical mass formula (SEMF), which provides the transformation between initial conditions in molecular clouds and the final masses of forming stars. For a particular SEMF, a given distribution of initial conditions predicts a corresponding IMF. In this paper, we consider several different descriptions for the distribution of initial conditions in star forming molecular clouds. We first consider the limiting case in which only one physical variable – the effective sound speed – determines the initial conditions. In this limit, we use observed scaling laws to determine the distribution of sound speed and the SEMF to convert this distribution into an IMF. We next consider the opposite limit in which many different independent physical variables play a role in determining stellar masses. In this limit, the central limit theorem shows that the IMF approaches a log-normal form. Realistic star forming regions contain an intermediate number of relevant variables; we thus consider intermediate cases between the two limits. Our results show that this picture of star formation and the IMF naturally produces stellar mass distributions that are roughly consistent with observations. This paper thus provides a calculational framework to construct theoretical models of the IMF. Subject headings: stars: formation – ISM: clouds – galaxies: formation

The initial mass function of stars: evidence for uniformity in variable systems.
The distribution of stellar masses that form in one star formation event in a given volume of space is called the initial mass function (IMF). The IMF has been estimated from low-mass brown dwarfs to very massive stars. Combining IMF estimates for different populations in which the stars can be observed individually unveils an extraordinary uniformity of the IMF. This general insight appears to...
متن کاملStar Formation in a Crossing Time
Observations suggest that star formation occurs in only one or two crossing times for a range of scales spanning a factor of ∼ 1000. These observations include (1) measurements of embedded cluster ages in comparison with the cloud core dynamical times, (2) measurements of the age difference versus separation for clusters in the Large Magellanic Clouds in comparison with the crossing time versus...

We investigate how the dynamical state of a turbulently supported, 1000M⊙, molecular cloud affects the properties of the cluster it forms, focusing our discussion on the star formation efficiency (SFE) and the initial mass function (IMF). A variety of initial energy states are examined in this paper, ranging from clouds with |Egrav| = 0.1Ekin to clouds with |Egrav| = 10Ekin , and for both isoth...

Knowledge of physical conditions in molecular clouds is a prerequisite for deriving the distribution of molecular material in the Milky Way and other galaxies, understanding star formation within these dense regions, the stellar initial mass function, and appreciating the eeects of interaction of young stars with their natal environment. In this lecture, I review some of the basic techniques fo...
متن کاملScaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters
We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...
